The programme of the 2011 World Copyright Summit has been conceived around the Summit’s tag line ‘Creating value in the digital economy: Create – Connect – Respect’. This tag line reflects the concerns and issues faced by CISAC members, first and foremost the 3 million creators its societies represent.
The three key words ‘Create – Connect – Respect’ reflect the main conference streams:
While the capacity to access content now seems endless and, from a consumer’s perspective, almost at no cost, where and how can value be extracted from the usage and dissemination of content? What are the models that will deliver significant value to provide return on investments for the promoters of these platforms and remuneration for rights owners? Is the answer in the ‘Cloud’? What are the best systems to ensure that rights owners are properly compensated? What is the role of ISPs? And where do creators fit in this new eco-system?
The Summit will be the ideal platform to discuss all these issues in a forward-thinking way with all the stakeholders.
Because it will take place in Brussels, the capital of the European Union, expect the 2011 Summit to have a strong European flavour. Very important pieces of legislation in the fields of copyright, collective licensing and the digital economy are being planned and discussed in Brussels. They will have a strong impact on the livelihoods of creators and their industries, not simply in Europe but elsewhere too.
And because of the nature of CISAC’s membership, which regroups societies active in all creative fields – music, audio-visual, literary, and visual arts – expect discussions, debates and keynotes expressing views from a wide variety of perspectives, especially those of creators.
